2001 Kites on Ice in the Classroom

One of the really great things about Kites on Ice in the Classroom program. This program is done with the middle school children, studying the history and culture of kites worldwide. It is an integrated unit, utilizing the internet for research, learning about kite aerodynamics, the different kinds of kites, designing and building their own. The Black Hawk Middle School 6th graders leaned about fighter kites as part of their unit on India.

About 450 kids came to Kites on Ice on Friday and spent part of the day with us. Activities included flying their kites on the frozen lake, attending workshops given by some of kiting's best such as Scott Hampton, Pierre Fabre, Charlie Sotich, Robert Trepanier to name just a few, watching the indoor flying exhibition, and, of course, lunch (!). It was a highly successful day from our point of view.

Here are pictures of SOME of the kites entered into the competition. There were MANY beautiful and wonderful entries. The judges had a difficult task. Needless to say, I think all the kites and their makers are winners.
